Golfinho Sports supports the ‘São Tomé e Príncipe a Nadar‘ project, which aims to reduce the high rate of non-swimmers in the country, where more than 80 per cent of the population doesn’t know how to swim (WACA data).
The project is led by Rita Lopes Fernandes – Sociologist, Sports Manager and Master in High Performance Training, and Angélico Santos – President of the São Tomé and Príncipe Swimming Federation, with the aim of teaching swimming and promoting aquatic safety in the country. The lack of basic swimming skills has resulted in countless drownings every year and the loss of scholarship opportunities in the Navy.
In a first phase, swimming lessons were organised for young people curious about learning to swim. Now it’s time to extend the programme to the whole country, creating small swimming schools for children and young people throughout the country.
As a sponsor, Golfinho Sports has supplied a range of swimming equipment such as shorts and swimsuits, swimming caps, goggles and teaching materials, with the aim of improving the conditions in which swimming is taught.
This project is already making a difference to sport in the country and will undoubtedly change the lives of many young São Toméans.
